WHITE

“My, my, my. You endangered the lives of several people, including your own son, in order to shave three seconds off your drive time.”

Jerry was white hot with fury. Who does this idiot think he is? Jerry stood next to the closed door of his Silverado. He stared at the driver of the red Cadillac he cut off.

“I drove the speed limit and apparently I’m here at the same time as you. Makes ya think, don’t it?”

Jerry pressed his right forearm against his hip. His gun was not there. He often carried it with him, even off the job. Although the driver of the Caddy spoke calmly, Jerry was afraid of him. There was something about him that caused the hair on the nape of his neck to stand up. At the same time, he hated him. He didn’t know why because he had never met him before. Something deep inside of Jerry made him furious to look at him, white hot furious.

There was something familiar about the Caddy as well. It looked very much like the car his wife used to drive.

The driver of the Caddy looked to be in his fifties. He stood as tall as Jerry; and he was as muscular as Jerry but leaner. His skin was bronzed from years in the sun and it hung upon his frame like cured leather.

“One of these days that kind of behavior’s gonna catch up with you.”

“Who are you?” asked Jerry.

“Learn to manage your time better and you won’t be in an all-fired hurry to catch up.”

“Who are you?”

The man just smiled. “Need some duct tape.” He turned to walk away.

“Who are you?” Jerry whispered as he watched the man walk into the store.

The passenger door closed. “Pa, I couldn’t get the belt undone.” Johnny walked to where his father was standing. “You alright, pa?”

Jerry turned toward his son. “What?”

Johnny could see that his father was bothered. Jerry’s face looked white, as if he’d seen a ghost. “You alright, pa?”

“Yeah, I’m fine, son. What kept ya?”

“Couldn’t get the belt undone.”

“Yeah, I need to get that fixed.”

They walked into the store to get their wood.
